Garden Guidance

This is the Month to Water!

Your plants will usually tell you if they’re thirsty or dehydrated; you just need to know what to look for, i.e., curling, drooping or wilting leaves, or unwelcome brown areas on the plant. We always recommend you water immediately, and the best time to do so is at dawn…but if your plant is in obvious dire straits, give it a good soak right away! Better yet, use mulch in your beds to help prevent this from happening. Mulch slows the rate of evaporation and can be a gardener’s helpful friend. Remember, too, that containers and especially hanging baskets need to be watered more frequently than plants in the ground – perhaps even twice a day!

Unique Outdoor Art

In recognition of Western New York’s awesome Allentown Art Festival, and the many other art galas in our region—check out this summer’s events in Lewiston and Williamsville!—we pay homage to garden art this month. Garden art can be something as simple as a birdbath, or as complex as a green wall. Green walls are created using pallets, fencing, lattice work, or even PVC pipe, to fashion a vertically-oriented garden. All it takes is patience, smart planning, and a good watering system. But no matter how elaborate, garden art is a personal reflection of the gardener, which makes every space uniquely special

Groovy Garden Profile

Before and After

Our featured residence went through an amazingly groovy transformation over the years—which is why we’ve chosen their garden for this month’s Groovy Garden Profile! Take a gander at the before-and-after pictures shown here.

The metamorphosis of this profoundly beautiful garden began in the early 2000’s. Among the highlights that have evolved since: an outdoor kitchen with a place to relax near the gas-assisted fire pit; the gentle sound of water flowing from the water feature; and a visually exciting array of colorful perennial varieties. A pergola over the existing kitchen—and who knows what else!—figure prominently in their future plans. Stay tuned to see more beautiful gardens!

Where Are the English Gardeners?

Last time around we featured artist Claude Monet’s gardens in Giverny, France, but this month we’ve stayed a little closer to home. Check out these interesting gardens…and guess where we photographed them!
